With equal parts sarcasm and honesty, “sadboy” is a cheeky nod to Joseph’s past relations and to the familiar situations many of us find ourselves in while navigating the modern dating scene. “It’s less about one particular guy, and more so a general look at my dating history. There’s this cycle of guys you meet out there and “sadboy” is sort of a tongue-in-cheek examination of the expectation vs. reality of them all” Joseph describes. “Writing this song helped me realize a lesson we all need to learn- we don’t actually want the sadboy. We just like the idea of them.”
“sadboy” follows Joseph’s 2019 break-out single, “leaning.” In reference to her previous release, Matt Simon (Ear to the Ground Music) described Alyssa Joseph as “an almost painfully honest artist who shares space with indie darlings like Boygenius and Big Thief” who’s music is “raw, engaging, and empowering.” Vent’s Magazine has describedJoseph’s voice as “sultry and soulful… recalling modern day artists such as Sharon Van Etten.“
